New Puppy Checklist: Everything You Need for the First Week

Bringing a puppy home is exciting and a little overwhelming. A little preparation goes a long way toward making the first week smooth for both of you.

Food and feeding supplies

Choose a puppy-formula food with high-quality protein. You will also need two stainless-steel bowls, a measuring cup, and a few small training treats.

A safe sleep space

A crate or a small playpen with a soft blanket gives your puppy a den-like space. Add a chew toy or two to keep them busy at bedtime.

Potty training essentials

Stock up on puppy pads if you live in an apartment, or plan a consistent outdoor schedule. Enzyme-based cleaners are a must for accidents.

Collar, leash, and ID tag

Even if your puppy is not going far yet, they need a properly fitted collar, a lightweight leash, and an ID tag with your phone number.

Grooming basics

A gentle brush, nail clippers, and puppy-safe shampoo help you get them used to grooming early.

Toys and mental stimulation

Rotate a few chew toys and puzzle feeders to prevent boredom. Puppies explore with their mouths, so safe, durable toys are essential.

Our New Puppy Starter Kit collection bundles the basics to help you get started without the guesswork.
